Kindness is the key to happiness

PBL - Term 1

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about kindness and the big question was: How can we build community through our actions?

First, we explored some collaborative activities and discussed how we could include kindness and build a sense of community through our actions at camp. Next, we were organised into groups where we had to unpack the above question. In our groups we considered how we could spread community and kindness through our entire school community. We decided that we would offer something that was free and would make others happy.

We created an action plan and we thought about donating old toys to less fortunate people or read books to Kakano, but what changed our minds was an even more amazing idea and that was giving out cards to people and make them feel good. We might have disagreed a little in the plan but we got through in the end by working together and completing our plan.

Reflection: 

For our final product our group passed lovely notes with compliments but I wasn’t there because I was sick. But i’m happy many people got our letters. Here’s what they look like: Link

How did our action build a sense of community in the school? It made people feel like they were at home and that they belonged here.

I contributed by writing the notes, starting the base, printing, cutting them out and handing them out on Thursday.

I think the PBL might impact on others by the compliments we had written, most of their expressions were a smile or a thank you. I think it influenced others positively!

What I learned about working with others was that sometimes we won’t get along but we will have to cooperate in the end.

Everything I Did In PBL

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for.
S for Science
T for Technology
E for Engineering
A for the Arts
and M for Maths
Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.
Then; make a table that was able to balance M&Ms for the team. We were much better at the second challenge because we could shape the table the way we wanted and we made it by using all of the materials.

In Literacy we learned to write up science experiments and to write a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.
How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

My team made this product called crystal sets where you can make and grow your own crystals. You have to use food colouring, borax, string and pipe cleaners, a  jar or cup and hot water. Here are the steps if you want to know how to grow them. Step 1 - Make your shape using the pipe cleaners
Step 2 - Get a jar and fill it with hot water
Step 3 - Add 3-4 Tablespoons of borax and mix till it get cloudy
Step 4 - put food colouring into the borax
Step 5 - Tie your string to one end of the pipe cleaner and the other end on a pencil is sitting on top of the jar so it can balance
Step 6 - Start dipping your pipe cleaner in the hot water and then put it in fully make sure you pencil is
Step 7 - Cover the top with a piece of paper or cardboard and wait for 8 hours to take it out.

WARNING - Do not eat the borax. Make sure you have a parent supervising you.

Reflection

My highlight from this PBL was many people bought our product and also that we sold out, we also made $19.
Next time I would create more items so we would get more money, i’d also consider maybe lowering the prices so lots of people would buy them. Maybe we could also change the product to something trending that everybody wants.

PBL Evidence

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about cultural stories and the big question was;
What is the significance in the 21st Century of our Cultural stories?

First we brainstormed what culture is and came up with lots of ideas. Culture is all about your country, lifestyle and traditions. Then we thought about our own culture and talked to our parents about our traditions and heritage. I wrote a post about my family and things we like to do. In Literacy we read and discussed myths and legends from around the world then we concentrated on Maori legends. I read Maui and the Sun and Battle of the Mountains which were very simple but pleasant stories.

We made a performance about the story Battle of the Mountains. Some students wrote the script, some students took on the job of making all the artwork, some worked hard on organising the music and others took on the role of bringing the story alive with dance and drama.

Reflection:
For our production I contributed by playing music and also stage effects

I think the show might impact on others by parents being wowed and proud, kids learning a thing or two. It may also inspire others to do the same.

What I learned about working with others was you have to play your part. You can’t just let everybody do the work and give it a go, also you can’t be doing all the work! You have to encourage others to get their fair share.

Hello My Little Followers Or Newcomers, In This Blog Post I Want To Talk About How I Swam For 8 Whole Days At School. The First Week Is Very Blurry As I Don't Recall It, I Went On Fine In The Freezing Cold Pool. Some Things Were A Bit Tricky Such As River Swimming And Breaststroke Kicks, I Also Tried Diving On Wednesday After School. It Didn't Work, I Face Planted Like A Ball Face First. I Missed Pyjama Day When Everyone Got To Wear Their PJ's In The Pool, I Was Sick For Thursday And Friday But I Don't Regret It My PJ's Are Precious. I Had A Very Nice Buddy, I Totally Won't Forget Her This Year And Next Year! It's True I Had Lots Of Fun Learning New Things And Remembering Old Ones Like Freestyle, Backstroke And Lots More But It Was Also Challenging!

Meerkats

Hello, in my hub we have been writing a story about a video using punctuation such as speech marks

and apostrophes. The rules with speech marks is using it for dialogue, which is a character talking in a story. Another rule with apostrophes is to make a whole word shorter such as isn't or don't. This is my piece of work I have come up with in the last few days. 

Meerkats

In their little den, some meerkats were sleeping; a little meerkat awoke first. He would be probably be thinking to himself, “I need to get up now!” but he flopped but to sleep with much satisfaction. Now some more meerkats were popping out of holes, they each looked at each other as the sun grew amongst them. I can somewhat tell they were saying, “good morning” to each other, as they ran outside they took sight something looking pink and soft. They had been looking after pomegranate which was very lush and ripe, the meerkats were dazed into the thought of eating it. But a while before they could have it a vulture swooped onto the branch, not to strike fear into the meerkats but taunt them by stealing their fruit! As two meerkats looked at each other in devastation the vulture was gone! The meerkats were so heartbroken but one stood among the rest and called on war, so they rushed towards the vulture scurrying rapidly. But the vulture was taking off so they clung onto each other like one huge rope, and yelling “weee!” along the way until they were thrown onto the air with the fruit. The vulture looked like he messed up, I could see it in his expression saying “they’ve got the fruit!” together the meerkats passed it to each other when the vulture swooped towards them. But as they hit the ground the vulture had stolen the fruit! As he cackled looking at the poor meerkats he crashed into the canyon, the pomegranate fell into the hands of the meerkats. Being meerkats they tossed around the fruit and across a tree but it smashed into the ground. They face palmed at the meerkat who threw it, even though it wasn’t intentional.
